The Chenrezig Tibetan Cultural Center was opened in 1990 by the Venerable
Losang Samten with the help of Dr. David Hall and UTEP President Diana
Natalicio. A meditation center was established in Worrell Hall, Philosophy
Department, 3rd Floor, Room 304, in order to develop an awareness of the
Chinese occupation of Tibet and of the Himalayan culture.
Since the Ven. Losang Samten first established the Center in 1990, he has
constructed four separate mandalas (sybolic arrangements of dieties
and/or symbols in a sadnpainting). Meditation classes are conducted at
the Center and through the Continuing Education Department and are free
for all UTEP students and faculty (for more information see events.
The Center's main purpose is to bring awareness to the people of the
community; to help them become friendlier, more caring, understanding and
loving; and to help form them into a human family on this planet.
